Via Rail and Unifor Council 4000 and Local 100 officials have announced that a tentative deal has been closed shortly before the deadline for about 2,400 workers to quit their jobs.

The deal still needs ratification by the union, dating back to January 1, 2022, and valid until December 31, 2024, according to a late-night statement on Via Rail.

Details of the new contract have not been announced, but will be announced when approved by members, according to a Unifor statement.

Since the strike was avoided, Via Rail said the tentative agreement would allow traveling Canadians to escape the uncertainty of the possibility of a shutdown.

“Thanks to union members and travelers for their patience and support while continuing to negotiate beyond the strike deadline to reach this agreement,” said Scott Doherty, Chief Negotiator of Unifor. I expressed my intention. “

As negotiations proceeded, the union offered to initiate employment behavior and postpone some deadlines that would have upset the company’s business from coast to coast.
