German cyclist Simon Geschke was excluded from the men’s road race after a positive coronavirus test.
The German team says Geschke first tested positive on Friday and his results were confirmed by another test later that day.
Germany said fellow riders Nikias Arndt and Maximilian Schachmann were allowed to race on Saturday. Emanuel Buchmann, the team’s fourth rider, was Geschke’s roommate, waiting overnight for the results of another PCR test for the virus. The team staff was negative on the test.
Geschke was the 2015 Tour de France stage winner.
German road racing teams live in hotels, not in the Olympic Village.
Geschke says he followed the Olympic hygiene rules. “I’m physically fine, but emotionally it’s a really terrible day,” he adds.
